CHANGES
“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” ― Rumi
What is change? Some of us hate it, others love it, while no matter how we feel it is the only constant.
After an ugly breakup, many of my girlfriends decide to change their hair to super short. Others choose to live in sweatpants and watch The Notebook and then get a Revenge Body.
Either way it is a change. Was your old hairstyle or the state of your abs truly the reason your relationship went south? Most likely not, but a hair cut or rocking a bikini sure can distract us for a while until we realize the faulty logic.
It is quite common for many of us to get super nostalgic over the good old days. We don’t want anything to change from the golden memories we think we have. What if they weren’t as golden as we think they were?
Since change comes as often as breaking news on-line, how can we ever trust anything is a constant? Friends, relationships, hairstyles??? How can we know we won’t change what we want?
Change comes no matter what we do. Weather is change, dusk to night is change, Winter to Spring is change.
When my son was five and we had a particularly nasty winter here in the Northeast (much like the current one ), he said “Why was Easter during the wintertime this year?”. I didn’t have an answer for him other than to go find his coat for the Egg Hunt.
The thing we can Change is how we respond to Change. We can stop throwing temper tantrums about the weather especially things we can not Change, which is about 99% of things.
Things I can not Change
Traffic
The Weather
My dog
The crazy things being said on talk radio as I drive to the gym
Things I can Change
When I leave the house
How I feel about the Weather
How I respond to my dog
The channel I have on my radio as I drive to the gym
The best way to lay the groundwork is when we are not in the midst of Change is mindset work. To work on Mindfulness when things are relatively calm will, enable you to to be calmer when things are turbulent. We can count on Change coming at us like Whackamole, whether to not we get flustered by it is our choice.
